In the paper we read the eighth chapter of Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina [Na Drini ćuprija] in the light of the poetics of tragedy. Tragic aspects of the narrative about the main heroine of the chapter, Fata, are observed in the range of three crucial questions: tragic conflict, tragic flaw, and position of the tragic character, while special attention is devoted to the phenomenon of fate. Since the depiction of these elements is conditioned by the stylistic currents of the epoch, we pay special attention to comparative insight into the various modern responses to the heritage of antiquity. In addition to achieving a broader insight into the introduced problem, another important comparative line is established by observing two more of Andrić’s female protagonists: Anika (Anika’s Times [Anikina vremena]) and Mara (The Pasha’s Concubine [Mara milosnica]), but also the main heroine of Stanković’s novel Impure Blood [Nečista krv].
