This paper seeks to provide insight into the analysis of female characters in one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, The Time of Death by Dobrica Ćosić. Through female characters, the writer helps us experience, understand and feel the tragedy of the events of an era. The main theme of the work, the First World War, leads to strong psychological changes in the lives of women, visible in their intimate confessions. Using the method of inner speech, the writer has shown the position and role of women in the family and the wider social environment. The emphasis is placed on the intimate world of the heroines, which in a narrative sense speaks of the position of the individual in society, while the feminine principle, pointed out by Dobrica Ćosić, refers primarily to a woman’s biological role, that of a mother, her care and dedication to the family, as well as a woman’s love for her beloved.
