Abstract

The paper analyzes the poetic features of Duško Trifunović’s poetry within the corpus of his books of poetry published from 1958 to 2005. Into account will be taken the poems that were not written primarily for melodic accompaniment, by which Duško
Trifunović is recognized in the public, but which also contain a variety show the trait of being accessible to the audience and communicating with it. One of the goals of this paper was to recognize the features that bring Trifunović’s poetry closer to the reading audience and wider folklore but also to pinpoint those characteristics that close the gap between the poetry and the socio-historical context in which the poet lived and worked. The gnomic verse, the aphoristic, proverbial character of the poems, the strong ironic distancing, and the metaphorical nature of the poetic motifs – these are characteristics that contribute to the quality of that poetry and make it worthy of critical attention. The subjects of consideration in this paper are also the poet’s position, the motives of persecution and tyranny as the backbone of the poetic world which Trifunović creates, and the constant play with the reader’s perception and reception. Looking back at the critical reception of his poetry, the paper aims to contribute to previous interpretations and valorize the poetry of a modern poet with a specific voice in the second half of the 20th century.
