TEODOSIJE AND DOMENTIJAN AS BIOGRAPHERS OF ST SAVA

Abstract

This work is a comparison between Domentijan’s and Teodosije’s Žitije Svetog Save (Hagiography of St Sava). It analyses the compositions of both works and all the important historical postulates of both writers, with the conclusion that Teodosije’s Žitije is older than Domentijan’s. It is pointed out that Domentijan used Teodosije’s work as a source. Having regard to earlier literature it is considered that the works of these two writers are not as similar as once thought. The historical basis of Teodosije’s work is more substantial than of Domentijan’s. Teodosije is considered the more reliable of the two. Domentijan’s
work is a compilation.
